So I did it. I tried Crossfit for the first time and didn’t die. Although it was close.
I took my first class last night, and it was an “Intro to Crossfit” class. This means that the workouts are not really timed, and are usually half of what the regular Crossfit class does. Usually the WODs (workout of the day) are for time, like as many rounds of something as possible in 20 minutes or 7 rounds in 20 minutes, etc.
Last night we started out with this:
25 overhead squats with PVC pipe
25 hand release push ups
Yeah…50 burpees was our freaking warm up.
Then we worked on some core movements doing L sits and V holds.
Then we worked on our triceps doing tricep dips, as many as possible in 3:00.
THEN we got to the actual WOD.
We did a Crossfit Benchmark workout called Cindy. Normal Cindy looks like this:
AMRAP (as many rounds as possible) in 20 minutes:
5 pull ups
10 push ups
15 air squats
But yesterday we did Cindy on steroids:
AMRAP in 10 minutes of:
10 push ups
15 air squats
20 push ups
30 air squats
15 pull ups
30 push ups
40 air squats
20 pull ups
40 push ups
60 air squats
And so on and so forth. Every round you added on a Cindy.
I made it through 3.5 rounds and finished with 40 push ups. Pull ups were all band assisted for myself and the majority of the class.
My arms were on fire and could barely do one more push up at the end. But I finished it. And I didn’t die. I wore my heart rate monitor in the roughly 20 minutes of actual working out…I burned 500 calories.

This morning I woke up and wasn’t hurting that bad. I thought I would be in more pain.
Since I had to work today, I decided to go to my gym and do my own Crossfit workout.
Jog 2:30 on treadmill and stretch
I did this:
7 rounds for time of:
7 box jumps
7 sit ups
7 squat cleans with a 12lb medicine ball
7 kettle bell swings with a 30lb kettle bell
Took me just over 20 minutes to complete this round.
Cool down: 5 minutes running/walking on treadmill
I spent around 25 minutes working out and burned 300 calories again as per my heart rate monitor.
I have a definite feeling that tomorrow I am going to be really sore. I’m at work now and feeling my chest and back muscles becoming increasingly more tender. All of those damn push ups.
I calculated it out that yesterday I did roughly 100 push ups. And those damn burpees. Who the heck invented those anyways!?!?
Overall I am falling in love with Crossfit. I don’t like push ups and I don’t like pull ups, but I don’t like them because I suck at them. By the way, the end of yesterday’s workout, all push ups were done on my knees.
I think Crossfit is a fantastic workout and it really does challenge me more. I can’t wait until the next class on Saturday…I have to work the next few days, and I don’t think I will physically be able to workout tomorrow. Icy hot and water for me the next few days!!!
